ABOUT JAMES MCNAY

With a background in Systemic Safety and Fire Safety Engineering, I am a Chartered Engineer and Discipline Director of the Fire Safety Division at Stantec. This work pertains to Fire Engineering, Fire Risk Management, External Wall Fire Risk Appraisals, and many other applications of fire safety strategy development, from active and passive industrial fire protection to Oil and Gas fire mitigation strategy development. Previously I specialised in the design of fire and gas detection systems in the process industry. While overseeing a team of technical safety consultants and engineers at the Micropack Headquarters in Aberdeen, Scotland, I had significant involvement in the design of F&G detection systems in the Gulf of Mexico, Alaska, North Sea, Caspian Sea, Australia, Qatar, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam.I have been involved in the generation and development of some of the most widely adopted F&G standards and guidance applied in the hazardous and process industries. Most notably, I Chair the BSI committee tasked with the generation of BS60080 Explosive and Toxic Atmospheres: Hazard Detection Mapping: Guidance on the placement of permanently installed detection devices using software tools and other techniques.I also served as the Fire and Gas Chair for the Safety and Cybersecurity Division of the International Society for Automation (ISA) and sat on the Working Group looking after ISA TR84.00.07 until 2021 when I returned my focus to Fire Safety Engineering in the Built and Natural Environment. I received my PhD from the Department of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering at the University of Strathclyde, for my work in Systemic Fire Safety Engineering, and the development of the \'Systemic HAZID and Operational Risk Evaluation\'(SHORE) methodology.In 2021 I authored the book \'A Guide to Fire and Gas Detection Design in Hazardous Industries\', to support designers of Fire and Gas Detection Mitigation systems, which was published in 2022. I currently sit on the Industry Competence Committee (ICC) reporting to/ supporting industry and the Secretary of State for Leveling Up, Housing and Communities, striving to improve competence in the construction industry of the Built Environment.
