ABOUT JAMES MARTIN

The work I keep coming back to is building people up. I graduated from college at 17, started at Princeton at 19, and when Beyoncé invited me backstage and asked what I wanted to do with my life, I told her I wanted to be a professor. I wanted to teach and run my own research. I was 18.My dissertation at Princeton produced SCH-79797, a dual-targeting antibiotic against multidrug-resistant pathogens, published in Cell. Postdoctoral work at the University of Chicago focused on chemotherapy resistance in pancreatic cancer. Somewhere in that process, the question that interested me most shifted: not what can I discover, but what does it take to build that capacity in someone else?I\'ve spent over a decade answering that question, from teaching five STEM courses to low-income minority young men at Urban Prep Academy in Chicago, to mentoring 25+ underrepresented undergraduates through Princeton\'s ReMatch Program, to teaching college-level science to high schoolers at Princeton\'s W.E.B. Du Bois Scholars Institute. The setting and the students change. The commitment to showing up for people who deserve someone in their corner does not.Today that work lives at Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine, where I serve as Assistant Professor and Co-Director of the Program on AI in Medicine. I design AI-powered Socratic tutoring systems that give students a non-judgmental space to struggle productively, an approach that earned a university-level award for innovation in teaching and that I\'m actively expanding across new courses and disciplines. I\'ve also trained 280+ faculty through provost-sponsored AI integration workshops, because what students experience depends more on how well we support the people teaching them than on any single curriculum. The program now reaches 900+ learners annually, backed by peer-reviewed research documenting real changes in student thinking.The same instincts that drive my teaching also drive my writing. In 2026, the New Jersey State Council on the Arts selected me as one of 100 recipients of an Individual Artist Fellowship in Prose, chosen from 870 applications through anonymous peer review. Precision, empathy, and the willingness to sit with something until it\'s actually true matter whether you\'re in a classroom, a lab, or a story.At 18, backstage at that concert, I said I wanted to teach and do research. I\'m doing both now, and I\'m not done. I\'m looking for people who believe students deserve better than what we\'ve settled for, and who want to build the tools, programs, and institutions that make that real.
