Prior to being appointed Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, James was the Divisional Dean of Natural Sciences (20••••23), the Associate Dean of The Graduate School (20••••22), assistant chair for the Department of Chemistry (2013–16) and filled the role of graduate program director of advising for the same department (2005–13).
