About James Loper

As the banner implies, I enjoy breaking down complex challenges into manageable tasks using first principles. The opportunity to learn something new everyday and work with exceptionally talented people is what keeps me at Jacobs. After college at Texas A&M University, I started as entry level structural engineer with Lockwood Greene in Atlanta in 1988. In those days, we were transitioning from hand drawings to CAD for the design of various industrial projects with heavy emphasis on engineering design, code analysis, specifications, and cross-discipline coordination.After joining the Jacobs Arlington (VA) office in 2003, I\'ve had the opportunity to participate with some incredibly talented and dedicated engineers, architects, planners, and leaders in which no two projects are the same. These days, we\'re continuing to focus on delivering high quality architecture and engineering design documents for facilities that support a variety of end-user needs including office, warehousing, housing, auditorium, industrial, aviation, clean room manufacturing, military testing, and water treatment. Our diverse portfolio includes designing new buildings as well as repair, renovating and strengthening existing buildings - some of which are nearing 100-years old. With the continuing improvement of BIM and computerized structural analysis, we\'re able to develop increasingly complex designs with greater confidence. Model building codes and standards including IBC, ASCE, ACI, AISC, and UFC remain the cornerstones of our work.While at Jacobs, I\'ve served as Structural Engineering Group Leader and Project Manager roles. Most recently, I began a new role as Mid-Atlantic Operations Manager where I have the opportunity to collaborate with a broad group to improve our work processes and grow the business. It\'s fun to watch and learn with the new generation of engineering thinkers coming online. They\'re also very good at first principles.
