About James Jones
When I was 23, I ran the New York City marathon. Now, some have said “Wow. That is an amazing accomplishment.” Or “How did you do it?” and most famously, “That sounds tough, but thankfully New York City is flat.”My responses are always “Thank you” and “I am still not sure how I completed it.” and “No, New York City is not in fact flat.”Of course if I sit down for deep reflection I can give definitive answers as to how I accomplished it—like losing 100 pounds after graduating college and utilizing CrossFit to keep me in shape, but my most profound motive was that I was running the marathon for disabled children and adults in my hometown. This achievement was completed because of who I was raised to be and the person I hope to become. When I set my mind to something, I push myself to accomplish it. And while there may be a lot of complaining, obstacles, and derailments along the path, I always seem to find my way. This translates into my professional career as well. Gene therapy is the future of cancer treatment and medicine. As a manufacturing associate, my position is not one that people want, but it is the one they need. The work is grueling, arduous, and long. But it is important, significant, and rewarding.I do it because my grandparents, who passed away from cancer, would be proud. I do it because I believe in science.I do it because I believe in a better future for everyone.When I was 23, I ran the New York City Marathon. At 26, I am saving lives through gene therapy.
