ABOUT JAMES HARRINGTON

In the process of producing better and more efficient pharmaceutical products, new methods for synthesizing or isolating the active ingredients are developed. Oftentimes, these methods introduce inorganic compounds into the product, either in the form of catalysts or present in the ingredients themselves. In order to ensure that the metals contained in the new products are not toxic or present in concentrations that are too high for human use, it is necessary to develop new, more accurate methods for testing the drug products. My mission is to develop new methods for analyzing drug products for the presence and content of metals. I strive to use my experience in trace metals analysis to help to characterize the risk due to inorganic compounds, both in the environment and in pharmaceutical products. I work in support of USP and testing of pharmaceutical products, excipients, and actives in the Trace Inorganics Department at Research Triangle Institute. In November, I attended the AAPS meeting in San Antonio, where my colleague Andrea McWilliams and I discussed ICP-MS and WDXRF testing of finished pharmaceutical products under USP.Specialties: Laboratory management, oral communication, written communication, mentoring, training, chemical analysis, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Powerpoint, Endnote, ICP-MS, AA spectroscopy, chemical extractions, environmental analysis
