ABOUT JAMES EGLETON

I am a European and UK Patent Attorney based in London, and have been a partner at J A Kemp LLP since April 2025. I have an interdisciplinary technical background in areas including medicinal chemistry, synthetic organic chemistry, pharmacology, cell biology, photochemistry and computational chemistry, which allows me to work effectively at the interface between chemistry and biology. I have particular experience in the pharmaceutical field, with a focus on: small molecule therapeutics; mRNA and nucleic acids; new formulations of pharmaceuticals; drug delivery technology; and antibody-drug conjugates. I am also experienced in obtaining Supplementary Protection Certificates (SPCs) across Europe for marketed drugs and advising on all aspects of SPC strategy, including how SPC considerations might impact on patent prosecution strategies.Away from pharmaceuticals, I also have experience filing and prosecuting patent applications across a range of other chemical technologies, including novel foods, nutraceuticals, polymers, chromatography and metallurgy.I am active in representing clients in contentious proceedings, in particular opposition and appeal proceedings before the European Patent Office, though I have also been involved in pre- or post-grant opposition proceedings in a variety of other jurisdictions such as Japan, South Korea and Australia.I work with a broad range of clients, from start-ups and university tech transfer offices to large multinationals, often developing a streamlined approach to achieve grant of patents in multiple jurisdictions worldwide. I also regularly assist clients with patentability searches and freedom to operate studies.
