ABOUT JAMES DRAPER

I am a Senior Lecturer in Creative Writing, Programme Leader for the MFA/MA in Creative Writing and Deputy International Lead for the School of English at Manchester Metropolitan University. As Programme Leader for the MFA and MA I lead a large and ambitious programme with Manchester-based and online distance learning cohorts of students working to enhance their craft and editorial skills while undertaking a major literary project. Our MFA/MA is one of the longest-running and most successful Creative Writing courses in the UK, having celebrated 25 years in 2023 and with more than 100 published alumni. As Deputy International Lead for English — and GoGlobal Lead for the Faculty of Arts and Humanities — I work to ensure that all students on our degree programmes have an international experience as part of their studies, and that we recognise and celebrate the cultures of our international students as a central part of our community. I support our School International Lead in developing links for our education and research with key partners and organisations around the world to raise the profile of our own work, and initiate collaborations and opportunities for innovation and knowledge exchange, including Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL). I moved into an academic role in 2023, becoming Senior Lecturer in Creative Writing having been Manager of the Manchester Writing School from 2006 to 2023. Working closely with the Academic and Creative Directors, I had responsibility for the day-to-day running of the School, overseeing a range of Creative Writing projects, events and people. I also coordinated recruitment and admissions to our postgraduate programmes and short courses. I have led a range of academic enterprise and knowledge exchange projects, which have involved developing and delivering impact- and income-generating activities, as well as coordinating marketing and communications for the department. Much of my work is outward-facing, engaging with external organisations, industry networks and public audiences in Manchester, across the UK and worldwide to create showcase events and opportunities and ensure our work has a presence and impact beyond the University.
