About James Davitt Rooney
James Davitt Rooney is a Boston-based nonprofit leader who has advanced institutions and a more competitive, just, and sustainable society by spearheading trailblazing partnerships and public affairs. He is Director of Partnerships for Candid, which offers the most comprehensive resources on nonprofits, foundations, and grants in the world, leading campaigns and coalitions to advance transparency, equity, and impact in the nonprofit sector in regional, national, and global arena. Rooney led his own strategy and public affairs consultancy from 2012-22, beginning in the UK where he co-led the Harvard Business School Alumni Angels of London and advised dozens of clients across sectors and countries. Rooney more recently advised US community foundations on collective leadership and strategy, including as project director at CFLeads and senior fellow at the Boston Foundation, where he earlier served as its first director of public affairs, leading award-winning research and policy initiatives that informed and influenced more than a dozen new laws and revolutionized the sector. Rooney also served as VP of the Mass High Tech Council, spearheading its clean energy portfolio, and he helped to redefine urban leadership by helping to launch and lead CEOs for Cities, a seminal national think tank. He began his career at Brown University, helping to elevate town-gown relations as director of community and government affairs and also worked in Alumni Relations. He earned an MPA at Harvard Kennedy School and a BA in Ethics and Political Philosophy at Brown and has volunteered on several national and state political campaigns and provided commentary in leading media.
