Best known as a music producer & mixer at Montreal’s Breakglass Studios, James Benjamin has established himself as a leader in the fields of writing, recording, mixing & broadcasting audio from within the walls of the recording studio as well as on location around the world. More recently he has expanded into the realm of 3D, immersive & experiential sound & music for video-games, VR & AR, & installations.In 2012, James helped the Arcade Fire organize & record the debut performance of the Grammy nominated Reflektor. Breakglass recorded tracks ‘Here Comes the Night Time’ & ‘Here Comes the Night Time II’ featured on the studio release of Reflektor. As part of this performance, James designed a reactive audio exhibit that echoed back twisted echoes of sound & phrases uttered by visitors to the room.Albums mixed by James include Purity Ring’s Lofticries, The Posterz Junga, Mozart’s Sister’s Being, CFCFs Outside, Pelada’s debut LP & James has served as host and mixer of the Live From Breakglass series mixing live albums for Stars, Plants & Animals, Bombino, Barr Brothers, Little Scream, & Moonface.In 2017, James partnered with Seattle based radio station KEXP & produced and mixed KEXP live from Breakglass sessions featured on KEXP’s terrestrial airwaves & their popular Youtube channel.In 2017, James & composition partner Mamoru Kobayakawa were engaged to compose and produce the original soundtrack for video game Ancestors The Humankind Odyssey, for Patrice Desilet’s studio Panache Digital Games.In the realm of 3D & immersive sound, James partnered in 2017 with Las Amistad National Peace park in Costa Rica, & the Arizona Centre for Nature Conservation/Phoenix Zoo, to record several hundred hours of ambisonic rainforest recordings of the environments of threatened species in protected areas [Atelopus Varius (harlequin frog) & Panthera Onca (Jaguar)]. The recordings will serve for research purposes & in the installation of immersive & experiential exhibitions.
