Since retiring I remain active in the fire service through my consulting work. I am currently working with a University to help develop new programs and advise them on area of special interests. I am highly concerned about two areas in the fire service that I see are becoming major problems. The first is the high rate of first responder suicides. We have all seen so much tragedy in our careers and have been taught that we are hero\'s and we do not share or talk about what we have seen because it will make us look weak. This has to change and we must do a better job of helping our brothers and sisters have successful careers. The second area of concern if the alarming rates of cancer that is occurring in the fire service. Having lost a firefighter while I was Chief and now have one of my best friends and fellow firefighter, with whom I have taught with for many,many years, was recently diagnosed with throat cancer. I know first hand the heartache and loss that fire department go through after losing a firefighter to cancer or any other means.
