ABOUT JAMARNE JAY MCGILL

I am a graduate student at the University at Buffalo of the State University of New York (SUNY). I am currently pursuing a Master of Science in Criminology, which is offered by the Department of Criminology and Sociology. Previously, I earned a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from Hunter College, and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from The City College of New York (Colin Powell School).Currently, I work at the Bronx location of the Fountain House Clubhouses as an Administrative Assistant in the Membership and Enrollment Center, a newsletter writer and editor, and a mental health advocate and community representative. The Fountain House Bronx Unit is part of a chain of clubhouses known as \"The Fountain House.\"Accredited by Clubhouse International, the Bronx location of the Fountain House (along with locations in Manhattan, Los Angeles, and Harlem) serves individuals living with a serious mental illness (SMI) and assigns a social practitioner and facilitator to help members reintegrate into the community and society. Members may have a variety of goals such as returning to school and/or obtaining employment, reconnecting with family members, and obtaining credentials or certifications. At the clubhouse, we believe that community is therapy. That means we build each other up and focus on the strengths. Clubhouses are different from your traditional mental health programs in that a clubhouse allows the member to participate in the day-to-day functions and assist the staff/administration. This helps empower the member and provides them with a sense of purpose that they probably won\'t find in a clinical setting. At clubhouses, emphasis is placed on the strengths of its members instead of diagnoses, medication, and labels.
