ABOUT BAHRAM JALALI

Bahram Jalali is UCLA’s Fang Lu Professor of Engineering and distinguished professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, with joint appointments in Biomedical Engineering and the department of surgery. A pioneer in silicon photonics, he is a prolific inventor of record-setting imaging and sensing technologies and advancements in high-performance computing and fiber optics. Jalali’s 300-plus peer-reviewed publications have been cited more than times. He holds 32 U.S. patents and 11 foreign patents, with multiple successful startups commercializing his inventions. Technologies based on his research include the first silicon laser; the first silicon-CMOS lightwave integrated circuits and the first start-up in this field; the world’s fastest fluorescence camera based on a new hybrid RF-optical imaging technique; and the world’s fastest bright-field and phase-contrast camera, imaging-guided flow cytometer, velocimeter, and vibrometer; and new light scattering particle analyzers. Jalali is a member of the National Academy of Inventors and a fellow of numerous professional societies spanning photonics, physics, and biomedical engineering. His work has earned inclusion among the Scientific American Top 50 and MIT Technology Review Top 10. He has been honored with the Optical Society’s R.W. Wood Prize, the Aaron Kressel Award, and the Institution of Engineering and Technology’s Achievement Medal, among others. A member of the California NanoSystems Institute at UCLA, Jalali began his career at Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill, N.J. after earning his Ph.D. in Applied Physics from Columbia University.
