ABOUT JAKUB DOBOSIEWICZ

I am a Politics & International Relations student at UCL, having chosen this course to explore the interdependence between disciplines and deepen my understanding of the world, for I believe it will empower me to find novel ways to change it.My journey has led me to believe that only through policy-level change can we address the critical problems we are facing and create a more egalitarian, just and open world. Since 2021, when my country’s government started using pushbacks to prevent migrants’ arrival via the border with Belarus, I’ve been developing my knowledge on migrations to better understand this phenomenon. Having learnt that migrations are an intrinsic part of our societies’ development, I realised the need to initiate systemic research-based migration policies safeguarding both migrants’ rights and aspirations, and security.Deeply concerned with the climate crisis, I soon noticed that the change brought about by action on individual level is woefully inadequate to the scale of the problem. Realising the need to create scalable solutions, based on the premise that in developed nations we often need little more than we already have, I created an award-winning start-up Mendly–a platform connecting tailors with their customers, preserving their craft and disincentivising consumption of new clothes through making repair accessible. Following my experience in the start-up ecosystem, determined to act within a greater community, I joined the Wschód Initiative campaigning for just climate and social policies in Poland. Within Wschód, I have i.a. created just energy transition postulates for our Plan for Generations–a comprehensive vision for a Poland where no one is left behind. Above all, Wschód has shown me that before trying to “solve” people’s problems, we should first really listen, building bridges not sowing divides. My concrete efforts to be the change I want to see have been recognised through my selection as a 2023 Rise Fellow. Rise provides young leaders with opportunities to serve others over their lifetimes. Being in this global community of leaders of change has shown me that only contact with people with very different perspectives can prepare me to tackle global challenges.I’m naturally curious, open-minded and I love to learn. In all that I do, I constantly seek opportunities to make a measurable positive impact. In the future I plan to co-create migration policies based on research, respect and openness.Let’s connect and work together to translate a vision of a better world into reality.
