WORK HISTORY
Chief Executive Officer @Children\'s Sailing Trust
Cornwall, GB
The Children\'s Sailing Trust is the charity that creates life-affirming watersports opportunities for young people in Cornwall. We overcome financial or physical barriers that hold children back from time on the water. Through sailing, children develop confidence, competence and resilience that stays with them on and off the water.1 in 5 children in Cornwall live in poverty. In some areas this rises to 3 in 5 (Cornwall VSF). That means that despite living minutes from the sea, few children get to go to the beach and ever fewer are able to try watersports. That\'s why the Children\'s Sailing Trust exists, to provide affordable sailing for those growing up along the coast.Time and again we see how time on the Helford River benefits student\'s mental and physical health and team-working skills, encouraging them to spend more time active and outdoors. Students who have never worn a wetsuit before, rarely go in the water or try new things grow in confidence through our weekly subsidised sessions. Their ability to work with others to overcome challenges is transformed. We are determined to keep doing more to open-up the powerful impacts of watersports for children ensuring there are no barriers holding them back. That\'s why we are so excited to have opened our new fully accessible venture at Trevassack Lake in late 2021. Accessible holiday accommodation and accessible watersports equipment at Trevassack Lake, a converted freshwater serpentine quarry, complement our subsidised sessions on the Helford River whilst increasing our ability to take more local children out sailing, including those with complex physical disabilities or special educational needs. In 2022 we are celebrating 25 years of life-affirming opportunities with a new, permanent base, world class facilities and a commitment to offering affordable and accessible watersports activities to all.
