About Jakari Young

It is my pleasure to serve the citizens of Daytona Beach as Chief of Police. As the agency head, I command all major divisions at a department with ~370 sworn and civilian staff members and a budget of $40M. I believe that the sanctity of human life must be at the forefront of everything that a police department does. Professionalism, compassion, transparency, honesty, and high moral character are traits that both police officers and community members want in a police chief and I possess all of these traits. My most important task as a police administrator is protecting public safety. To this end, I worked with my command team members to establish the Violent Crime Initiative (VCI), which decreased violent crime 30% city wide in 2017. By increasing execution of probation checks, warrants, and offender tracking (focusing on summer months), the department completed more than 500 arrests. We were also able to optimize law enforcement operations to target “micro zones” of high-risk criminal areas. My devotion to community policing and relationship development has been proven again and again. Recently, I launched the first (and now annual) “Daytona 100” in which approximately 100 local children ride bikes with officers on a set route and attend a community event afterwards, which builds mutual understanding and appreciation between law enforcement and the public. I have had an extremely rewarding career in law enforcement. Yet, of all the titles I’ve held the most important titles are Husband and Father. My faith and my family inspire me to succeed every day.
