Shaping the Future of Python + SQL Server by working on mssql-python, Microsoft’s next-generation, open-source Python driver for SQL Server. The goal: deliver a driver that’s fast, cross-platform, and built for today’s developer experience. My role brings together C++ systems programming, Python bindings with PyBind11, and adding support for Entra ID.Some highlights from the journey so far- Implemented full DBAPI compliance along with advanced schema discovery features (SQLGetTypeInfo, SQLProcedures, SQLForeignKeys, SQLPrimaryKeys, SQLColumns, SQLStatistics, SQLSpecialColumns) so developers can easily introspect and navigate their databases- Added support for Microsoft Entra ID authentication (Integrated, Interactive, Managed Identity), making the driver secure and enterprise-ready- Benchmarked and optimized performance against pyODBC, improving both memory efficiency and query execution times- Ensured pyODBC API parity, so developers can adopt mssql-python without friction- Experimenting with AI-assisted development tools to help with code generation, automated testing, and quality improvements.
