ABOUT JACQUES ELION

Dr. Elion earned his M.D. from Paris Descartes University in 1974 and his Ph.D. from Paris Diderot University in 1981. He served as a Research Assistant in Hematology at the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine, University of Minnesota (1976–1977), and was a Fogarty Visiting Scientist at the U.S. National Institutes of Health (1985–1986). He is currently an Honorary Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the Paris Cité University Medical School and was previously a Visiting Professor at the University of São Paulo (FMRP-USP). Dr. Elion also served as Director of the Department of Medical Genetics at the Robert Debré University Hospital. Dr. Elion has mostly conducted his research the French National Institute of Health and Medical Research (Inserm) in Paris and Guadeloupe (French West Indies). His group in Paris was operating at the National Institute of Blood Transfusion (INTS) and is a key component of the French Laboratory of Excellence on the Red Cell (GR-Ex). His research focused mostly on the pathophysiology and innovative treatments of sickle cell disease (SCD) as well as molecular microbiology. His work has identified multiple genetic markers that contribute to clinical variability in SCD and has highlighted the broad effects of hydroxycarbamide on various cellular targets, including endothelial cells and leukocytes, beyond its action on the erythroid lineage. His findings also revealed its impact on the expression of numerous molecules involved in cell adhesion, vascular tone, and inflammation. Dr. Elion has served on numerous advisory committees and chaired the International Advisory Board of the Global SCD Network. He has also organized and chaired several international scientific meetings, including the scientific session during the inaugural ceremony of the 1st World Sickle Cell Disease Day, held on June 19, 2009, at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City. https://univ-paris-diderot.academia.edu/JacquesElion
