ABOUT JACQUELINE PUJOL
I am a nontraditional, first-generation Peruvian and Cuban American medical student who changed career paths from the nonprofit/public sector to medicine. With six years of nonprofit/public sector work, I bring real-world experience as well as firsthand cultural insight into the field of medicine. Through my personal and work experience, I have become deeply aware of the cultural, economic, and health access barriers that under-resourced minorities and immigrants face in this country. My early experiences enabled me to thrive in my post-undergraduate work in the health, nonprofit, and, local government sectors as I worked towards expanding access to healthcare and social services for underserved communities. Developing type 1 diabetes as a young adult has also given me a unique perspective on chronic disease—through the lens of a patient—and has taught me the importance of utilizing shared decision-making and a holistic approach in medicine. As I continue on my medical journey, I hope to leverage my unique set of experiences as I work towards making healthcare more equitable and representative of all populations.
