ABOUT JACK SMITH

I am a recently graduated engineer starting out in an exciting career in the energy industry. Currently working as an innovation engineer at National Grid Electricity Transmission since September 2022, I am calling upon my technical and creative skills to drive change in an industry which is at the heart of a clean and affordable energy future for consumers. The role involves pushing new ideas and technologies from simple concepts into full-scale development towards business as usual operations, ultimately delivering significant benefits to energy consumers. Ensuring proposed solutions are technically and economically feasible is essential, and all projects must be managed effectively to be successful, which is where innovation engineers at National Grid step in.Over the past 4 years during University and in industry I\'ve developed a diverse range of engineering skills. I have worked with various pieces of software including Solidworks, ANSYS Mechanical (FEA) and ANSYS Fluent (CFD), and am particularly proficient in programming and modelling in MATLAB and Simulink. My degree has given me an extensive understanding of power and communications electronics, flight dynamics, material science, space systems, and computational techniques - culminating in the design of a fully electric light aircraft in my final year which went on to win the RAeS Light Aircraft Design competition 2022. I am also experienced in writing reports and technical papers, successfully publishing a journal article on Loss of Control in Flight in my final year. Through founding the University of Birmingham Aerospace Society, I have also developed useful organisation, leadership and budgeting skills. Part-time work at McDonald\'s as a crew member during over 5 years during sixth form and University has also developed my teamwork and communication skills, particularly with respect to communicating with customers. As part of the University of Birmingham Air Squadron (UBAS) for 2 years, I was able to further develop myself as an individual through UBAS\'s 7 pillars: Flying, Force Development, Sports, Charity, Social, Personal Development and Leadership Training, and Adventure Training. Some highlights from this experience include helping to run the RIAT 2022 air show (meeting Tom Cruise in the process), partaking in the Remembrance Day Parade in Birmingham in 2021 and many hours of flight training.Away from work and University I enjoy skateboarding and surfing (when I have the opportunity to get to the coast!). I am also an avid music lover who loves Hi-Fi and collecting vinyl records.
