ABOUT JACK SHARMAN

I defend businesses and individuals who are facing significant civil and criminal problems. I carry out corporate internal investigations. I advise executives, boards of directors, and other decision makers. I lead my firm’s White Collar Criminal Defense & Corporate Investigations practice group. What does that mean? It means that I and my colleagues help people stay out of trouble by helping with compliance, conducting internal reviews, and working with prosecutors and regulators to get the best possible outcomes. It also means that I take to trial — when necessary — matters involving kickback allegations, government contract fraud, public corruption, the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, healthcare fraud, qui tam lawsuits, the False Claims Act, and criminal antitrust charges.A company can be put out of business or a life destroyed by proceedings outside a courtroom. I was Special Counsel to the House Financial Services Committee for the Whitewater investigation involving President Bill Clinton. From 2016-17, I was Special Counsel to the Judiciary Committee of the Alabama House of Representatives for the impeachment investigation of Gov. Robert Bentley. More recently, along with my colleague Liz Huntley, I have served as Independent Counsel to a police review board looking at law enforcement responses to George Floyd-inspired protests. What else? I went to Washington & Lee for college and Harvard for law school. After law school, I clerked for Judge David B. Sentelle, U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, and worked at a Washington, D.C-based international law firm. I have also taught law as an adjunct professor at W&L and the University of Alabama.[NOTE: one with a Soviet mind might think this is lawyer advertising. If you fall in that category, read this: DISCLAIMER: “No representation is made that the quality of the legal services to be performed is greater than the quality of legal services performed by other lawyers.” Any questions about this blog may be addressed to Jackson R. Sharman Lightfoot, Franklin & White LLC, The Clark Building, 400 20th Street North, Birmingham, Alabama, 35203]Specialties: Corporate internal investigations, white-collar criminal defense, business compliance, defense of officers and directors.
