About Jack Fischl
Ten years later, and I’m still addicted to building businesses. I got my first taste while serving in the Peace Corps in the mountains of Panama. The folks I was working with in the community wanted to create a tour operation…so we made one from scratch. The community earned money and got to share their culture with foreigners on their own terms, and the travelers loved how real the experience was. This inspired myself and a business partner to create Keteka - a marketplace where travelers could find and book authentic tours and activities in Latin America, with validated local guides. We started with 5 tours in one country and the jankiest WordPress website you’ve ever seen and scaled the business to 2,500 tours in 18 countries. Through a lot of trial and error, I taught myself how to build a customer acquisition engine (SEO, SEM, email, CRO, etc.), which resulted in over people booking tours on Keteka. I also got my first taste of recruiting, managing, and growing talented people - one of my favorite parts of growing a company. The pandemic put an end to that business, but instead of avoiding start-ups…I decided to dive right back in.At Placemakr (a Series C $100 million ARR hospitality and real estate company), I: 1) Rebuilt the marketing function from scratch - and turned it into a profit center 2) Created a customer acquisition engine 3) Led the growth marketing team A few other highlights from Placemakr-Increased monthly customer acquisition via marketing activities by 10x, with a 7 ROAS-Increased the share of direct revenue from marketing activities from 3% to 17%-Expanded the number of profitable marketing channels from four to ten -Key member of a small team that led the company through a rebrand.I\'m now helping Bouldering Project grow as Director of Marketing, where I lead the strategy, development, and execution of national marketing initiatives that drive membership growth, regional engagement, and brand consistency across all 13 Bouldering Project gyms. Hit me up if you\'d like a day pass to the DC gym!A few bullets about the person behind the profile-I was born in DC but grew up overseas (Beijing, Hong Kong, Tokyo). I’ve lived in five countries in the Americas and Asia and have traveled to over 40 -I’ve coached and mentored over 100 early stage start-ups and small businesses-I used to write articles for Quartz and Mic, with several earning over shares and reads-I’m the proud father of a little girl who seems to be half toddler, half hurricane.
