About Jabari Lyles
Jabari Lyles (they/them) is an unapologetically Black, fat, queer, trans and nonbinary educator, community organizer, public sector professional and management consultant with over 15 years of experience advancing people-centered, justice-driven work. Their career has focused on developing people, programs and institutions that boldly serve and center historically marginalized communities, and move us toward a more just, informed and liberated society.Prior to launching Jabari Lyles Consulting, Jabari served as the first-ever Senior Advisor to the Mayor and Director of LGBTQ+ Affairs for the City of Baltimore. Their previous leadership roles include Chief Operating Officer and Senior Strategist at Maryland Safe Haven, President and Acting Executive Director at The Pride Center of Maryland, Executive Director at Glisten Maryland, and Co-Chair of the Youth Equality Alliance at FreeState Justice. Jabari is a former elementary, middle, and high school teacher at public and independent schools in Baltimore City. In 2021, the Governor of Maryland appointed Jabari to a four-year term on the State’s inaugural Commission on LGBTQIA+ Affairs, where they chaired the Youth and Education committee.During the last five years as Principal of Jabari Lyles Consulting, Jabari has partnered with hundreds of schools, businesses, movement leaders, and organizations nationwide, providing training, facilitation, strategic consulting, technical assistance and guest speaking.Jabari is a 2018 Baltimore Homecoming Hero; a two-time recipient of the Mark F. Scurti Award for Outstanding Contributions to the LGBTQ Community (OUTLaw, University of Baltimore School of Law); a Business Equality Pride Magazine Top 40 LGBTQ Leaders Under 40 honoree; and the Maryland LGBTQ Chamber of Commerce’s 2022 Emerging Leader of the Year.Their work has been featured in local and national outlets including The Baltimore Sun, The Baltimore Banner, Washington Blade, The New York Times, Rolling Stone, WYPR, Okayplayer, and Youth Today. Their 2017 TEDx Talk, Black Self/White World: Lessons on Internalized Racism, has garnered over views and has been used in racial justice education and university curricula across the globe.
