ABOUT JAAFAR BENNOUNA
I am a medical oncologist and head of the medical oncology department at Foch Hospital in Suresnes, France. I received my medical degree from the University of Nantes in 1996 and am board certified in medical oncology. I subsequently completed a PhD in life sciences at the University of Nantes, and from to 2001 I worked as a research associate in the Immunologic Monitoring and Cellular Products Laboratory at the University of Pittsburgh (USA). From to 2016, I headed the medical oncology department at the Institut de Cancérologie de l’Ouest (ICO) in Nantes, and from 2017 to 2021 I contributed to the development of medical oncology, including clinical research, at the University Hospital of Nantes.At Foch Hospital, the medical oncology department has been structured around several dedicated platforms, including a supportive care unit and an early-phase oncology trials platform. These are essential to maintaining and strengthening our expertise in medical oncology. All our activities are embedded in the hospital’s multidisciplinary medico-surgical environment, fostering close collaboration with surgeons and other specialists to provide comprehensive, patient-centred cancer care.My main research interests focus on lung carcinoma and gastrointestinal cancers, as well as early clinical development and phase I trials. I have authored numerous articles in national and international peer-reviewed journals and have presented the results of my work at major international conferences.I am a member of several professional societies, including the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO), GERCOR and the Institut Francophone de Cancérologie Thoracique (IFCT). Since September 1, 2026, I have been the Secretary of the Scientific Council of IFCT (Institut Francophone de Cancérologie thoracique). I also served as President of UNICANCER GI from 2013 to 2016
