ABOUT IVASHKIV LIONEL

Dr. Ivashkiv is the Chief Scientific Officer, Richard L. Menschel Research Chair, and David H. Koch Chair in Arthritis Research at Hospital for Special Surgery, and Professor of Medicine and Immunology at Weill Cornell Medicine. As an active scientist, Dr. Ivashkiv studies cytokine-mediated pathogenic mechanisms in autoimmune, inflammatory and musculoskeletal diseases related to Rheumatology and Orthopedics. Dr. Ivashkiv\'s laboratory investigates regulation of cytokine signaling, cytokine production, and inflammatory phenotype of innate immune cells such as monocytes and macrophages, with a focus on rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and tissue repair. We are interested in mechanisms of activation and training of innate immune cells and their bone marrow progenitors, understanding what causes flares of disease, and discovering new therapeutic targets. Our work includes genome-wide approaches to study gene expression, epigenomic mechanisms, identification and characterization of enhancers, and more recently single cell transcriptomics of RA and disease models. In his leadership role as CSO, Dr. Ivashkiv directs the HSS Research Institute for Biological Sciences, with over 20 laboratories working on pathogenesis of musculoskeletal, inflammatory, and autoimmune disorders. Dr. Ivashkiv is committed to mentorship of students, trainees and junior faculty, and has successfully mentored more than 15 junior faculty and helped them achieve national and international prominence and to obtain NIH support for their research. As part of the faculty of Weill Cornell Medicine he is involved in teaching medical and graduate students and is a member of the Immunology and Microbial Pathogenesis Graduate Program.
