About Ivan Kozlov
Ivan Kozlov is a third-year Reed College student pursuing a B.A. in Economics and is interested in urban design, architecture, economic development, and social movements.Currently, he is participating in \"Urbanism and the Changing City\" a semester-long academic program focused on urban resilience and social change through Bard College in New York City, where he also interns at Steppe Interior Design Studio. While in New York, Ivan is improving his skills in architectural drawing, 3D modelling in Rhino, design in Adobe Illustrator, and mapping in QGIS.In 2025, Ivan received a Reed College Economics Department fellowship grant to investigate the process of Ukrainian urbanization by integrating economic modelling, urban theory with empirical analysis. He conducted quantitative regression analysis in Stata on the evolution of urban hierarchies across Ukraine and neighboring Eastern European countries from 1897 to the present using archival census data and testing whether Zipf\'s Law holds across shifting political borders and major historical shocks. His current research is focused on Public Life and Public Space Study of Open Streets in NYC. Ivan has recently been awarded the Evan Rose Fund to study regenerative urban design in Poland and examine adaptive reuse strategies as a case for Ukrainian post-war reconstruction. In the Spring of 2025, Ivan studied Contemporary Art History and EU international relations at Freie Universität to explore how cultural, political, and material forces shaped post-war Berlin’s urban reconstruction. At Reed, Ivan manages a large-scale outdoor program with a budget, connecting the academic community with the nature of the Pacific Northwest. As an alumnus of the Future Leaders Exchange Program and Ukraine Global Scholars, Ivan builds cross-cultural bridges through promotion/preservation of Ukrainian heritage and advocacy for supporting Ukrainians during war, which led him to establish Ukrainian Club XATA at Reed College.Fluent in Ukrainian, Russian, and English, with growing proficiency in German, Ivan brings a cross-cultural perspective shaped by international experiences. His long-term goal is to contribute to post-war Ukrainian reconstruction after the completion of his studies.l

Work-in-progress paper with Professor Jon Rork on the evolution of the Ukrainian urban hierarchy and its integration into the broader Eastern European economic system across imperial, Soviet, and post-independence periods. This research combines spatial analysis, historical data construction, and quantitative modeling (rank-size regressions, Zipf law estimations, Hill estimators, and panel econometrics) with comparative analysis of shocks and institutional change.Supported by the Economics Summer Research Fellowship, this project provides both empirical evidence on urban dynamics and insights relevant to the country’s post-war recovery and long-term development trajectory.
