About Itchel Cardenas

I am passionate about expanding access to resources for first-generation scholars and underrepresented communities. Currently, I work with Tax Help Colorado, where I support free tax preparation sites by coordinating and training volunteers for IRS certifications, translating client- and volunteer-facing materials, presenting on tax credits, managing data processes, and creating digital content that increases community awareness. My work helps ensure families receive the tax benefits they deserve and volunteers feel empowered to make an impact within their community.Before this role, I spent six years in higher education and college access, supporting over 500 students through inclusive programming, pre-collegiate summer initiatives, campus visits, curriculum development for first-generation undergraduate courses, and program development for high school and middle school students. Beyond direct student support, I worked on hiring, training, onboarding, marketing, data management, and listserv management.Across all of my roles, I’ve developed a deep understanding of the barriers first-generation, low-income, and underrepresented communities face—and the systems that can better support them. I use data as a storytelling tool to elevate community voices, highlight gaps in access, and advocate for equitable opportunities.
