Applied Machine Learning Researcher @Danu Insights

View department →

Edinburgh, GB

Joined Danu Insights, an early-stage, venture-funded tech startup in Edinburgh.75% of my time is spent doing cold, hard research and coding in Python (a lot of jax and numpyro)- all with a focus on Bayesian stats and Bayesian optimisation. The other 25% I do whatever is needed to make progress: design marketing packs, do user testing, draft branding guidelines, reach out to customers, conduct user interviews, discuss UI/UX design, make a landing page, lead our hiring process, order stickers. If it needs doing, I\'ll have done it.

ABOUT ISABELLA DEUTSCH

I am a translator between people and data who thrives at the intersection of machine learning, Bayesian statistics, and solving problems that matter. My background spans both academia and industry, and I enjoy collaborating across disciplines to tackle messy, real-world questions.I am an Applied Machine Learning Researcher at Danu Insights, an early-stage venture-funded startup based in Edinburgh. 75% of my time is solving challenging problems with maths, stats, and code - lots of Bayesian approaches alround. The remaining 25% I do whatever is needed to make progress in a small company (e.g. designing marketing materials, reaching out to collaborators, discussing UI/UX design, leading our hiring process, ordering stickers). If it needs doing, I\'ll have done it.I hold a PhD in Statistics from the University of Edinburgh and a Masters in Statistical Science from the University of Oxford. I\'ve worked on everything from real-world smart data to product cannibalisation. I co-founded the Piscopia Initiative to encourage women and non-binary students to consider a PhD in mathematics, served as a trustee for a charity with a multi-million pound budget, and regularly speak at public science events like the Cabaret of Dangerous Ideas at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and the Edinburgh Science Festival.
