About Isabella Messina

I graduated from Penn State University with a B.A. in Psychology and a minor in Sociology, and I am now pursuing my M.A. in Psychology at The New School for Social Research in New York City. I am working toward a career in policy-related mental health consulting, with the goal of collaborating with international organizations like the United Nations to help develop and advise on mental health initiatives that address global challenges. My academic background and multicultural experiences have given me a strong foundation to analyze mental health systems. I aim to expand on this by deepening my research skills and policy knowledge through graduate study, preparing me for meaningful work in global mental health policy. My passion for international mental health policy is deeply rooted in my family history. My grandfather, Gustavo García Moreno, served as Colombia’s ambassador to the United Nations, and my cousin, Iván Duque Márquez, the former President of Colombia, worked to expand public mental health services. These examples of public service have inspired my own commitment to improving global mental health care and reducing disparities. I aspire to shape mental health policies that increase access to care and elevate the voices of underserved communities. I hope to combine my passions for psychology, social advocacy, and policy work into a career that drives meaningful change on a global scale.

Experience

  1. Child Sponsorship Advocate

    Compassion International

Sep 2019 — Present · Santa Marta, CO

My commitment to supporting others and building meaningful relationships has been a central part of my life, and my role as a Child Sponsorship Advocate with Compassion International reflects that. For over five years, I have sponsored Isabella, a young girl from Santa Marta, Colombia, providing not just financial assistance but also consistent emotional support, encouragement, and a lasting connection. This experience is especially meaningful to me because of my deep ties to Colombia. My mother was born there, and half of my family’s roots are in the country. I have always felt a strong connection to the culture and the people, and being able to support someone in a place that means so much to me has made this journey even more fulfilling.Beyond providing financial aid for her education and healthcare, I have made an effort to ensure she has access to the resources she needs to thrive. I have sent care packages filled with school supplies, clothes, toys, and essentials to support both her education and daily life. Through our letters, we have built a relationship that goes beyond sponsorship. We share stories, celebrate achievements, and exchange perspectives, allowing me to not only provide support but also learn from her experiences and resilience. This commitment is about more than just one person. It has reinforced my belief in the importance of community, empowerment, and providing people with the tools they need to succeed. Supporting Isabella has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my life, and it has strengthened my dedication to humanitarian work. I am passionate about uplifting others, fostering connection, and using my resources to create meaningful and lasting impact.
