About Isabel D.
While I was first trained as a scientist, then as an educator, and lastly as an architect- I bring all of my diverse experiences to the table in my design work. Through studying for a Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Studies and Biology from Reed College \'21, I embraced my love for the planet and immersed myself in the exploration of the natural ecosystems of the Pacific Northwest. During this experience, I discovered my love for teaching through Reed\'s Science Outreach Program, which provides public school students with engaging, hands-on, inquiry-based science experiences, every week. I continued teaching fifth graders when I moved on to grad school through AFO\'s Architects in Schools program, further expanding my skills and experiences as an educator. During my Master of Architecture from the University of Oregon ‘24, I focused not only on environmental sustainability within architecture, but also on urban design and spatial justice. My goal is to better integrate the built environment with the natural landscape, both aesthetically and technically, while healing our communities\' relationships with the places where we reside. Prior to attending college, I spent a gap year living in Rabat, Morocco, thanks to YES Abroad, a diplomacy scholarship from the US Department of State. In Rabat, I lived with a host family, attended a local high school, and volunteered at Fondation Orient-Occident, a NGO that provides support for migrants and refugees living in Morocco. My experience in Morocco heightened my awareness of how climate and culture affect architecture and urban design. Even then, I knew my undergraduate studies in biology would ultimately lead me to architecture in graduate school. I also have a history of work experience in project management and events planning and coordination. During college and graduate school, I sought out student worker opportunities where I could use my management and communication skills by helping professors and student groups plan and execute large-scale events and conferences. Thanks to my multicultural upbringing and passion for immersing myself in foreign cultures, I am fluent in English, French, Spanish, and Portuguese, and conversational in Moroccan Arabic.
