ABOUT IROSHA WANITHUNGA
As a Ph.D. candidate specializing in Soil Microbiology and Agroecology, I bring a solid foundation in the study of soil greenhouse gas movements, encompassing both agricultural and natural ecosystems. My current research is dedicated to precisely measuring N2O gas exchange in maize cropping systems, particularly those enriched with nitrogen-fixing bacteria. This work involves active N2O measurement and concurrent 15N isotope studies alongside DNDC modeling, all aimed at advancing our understanding of nitrogen dynamics in soil.In addition to my current research, my Master\'s research delved into the fascinating world of methane oxidation in native prairie soils. I explored how prescribed burning and land use management affect methane oxidation in diverse soil types across various Kansas precipitation regimes. Through Geochip techniques and PLFA analysis, I gained insights into soil microbial-mediated methane oxidation and the communities of methane-eating microorganisms. This research allowed me to comprehensively understand the soil carbon cycle.With a background in soil nitrogen and carbon cycles, I\'m passionate about exploring soil carbon sequestration and developing strategies for mitigating greenhouse gas emissions. My interests extend to both agricultural and natural ecosystems, as I believe that sustainable practices are crucial for the health of our environment. I\'m also eager to contribute to soil health initiatives and soil carbon credit programs.I\'m excited to continue my journey in soil science and make meaningful contributions to our understanding of soil\'s role in environmental sustainability.\"
