ABOUT IRINI ZERVAS

I have a background in art history and have worked in diverse roles in arts and culture—including curatorial research, communications, development/fundraising, and education. Along with strong skills in research (exhibition, provenance, artist biography), writing, editing, and database management, my varied experience has provided me with a wealth of knowledge across the arts landscape.Additionally, I am an experienced freelance copyeditor who helps artists and cultural professionals to clarify their ideas and polish texts for publication. I have edited several graduate art history theses and essays published by Hyperallergic, BOMB Magazine, and Hunter College Art Galleries.My original research on German art historian and artist Franz Roh positions him as the \"author\" of the widely-circulated 1929 photobook “Foto-Eye.” Through the lenses of Roh\'s scholarship on the concept of Magic Realism and experimental art practice, I claim that the book proclaims photography’s ability not merely to record, but to disrupt any sense of reality in images.Writing interests: modern and contemporary art, visual culture, Surrealism, twentieth-century photography, gender and the body, dance.
