About Irina Degtiar

I’m Irina Degtiar (Ph.D, Biostatistics, Harvard University) a statistician interested in advancing patient health, public health, and health policy. I’m passionate about using my biostatistics and causal inference expertise to generate and translate findings into actionable insights that inform decision-making. I have led statistical analyses that have shaped Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services thinking around whether to scale policy pilots into nationwide policy, medical device company decisions on whether to proceed with clinical trials, as well as our nation’s understanding of what health, disability, and education interventions improve beneficiary outcomes. I bring 12 years of experience developing, leading, and implementing RWE, HEOR, health policy, and clinical utility studies using claims, EHR, lab, survey, and clinical trial data. My methodological expertise spans generalizability, causal inference, Bayesian inference, machine learning, and study and economic model design & analysis. My first-author papers in generalizability and transportability approaches have won awards from both statistics and economics communities—a multidisciplinary bridging that defines my approach to my work. I love collaborating with and translating findings to a range of audiences, from clinicians to policy experts, and love digging my hands into code—most recently R and Stan, though I’ve previously coded in Python, SAS, Stata, and Perl.
