As a DSCO, the role is central to ensuring children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) – and their families – receive the right care, support, and advocacy. Key responsibilities include: Strategic Lead – Acting as the main point of contact between social care and SEND services, ensuring statutory duties are fulfilled and services work in partnership. Collaboration & Partnership – Working closely with education, health, and social care colleagues to strengthen multi-agency approaches, ensuring children and families experience a seamless pathway of support. Quality Assurance – Overseeing and improving the contribution of social care to Education, Health and Care (EHC) planning, reviews, and assessments. Family Voice & Advocacy – Promoting co-production by listening to families and championing their voices in decision-making processes. Policy & Guidance – Providing advice, guidance, and clarity around statutory responsibilities, helping teams and professionals navigate complex legislation and best practice. Improvement & Accountability – Monitoring outcomes, identifying gaps, and driving continuous improvement in the delivery of social care input within SEND.The DSCO role ensures children and young people are at the heart of planning and support, and that social care plays its full role in making a real difference to lives.
