ABOUT IRENE HEALEY

Prostheses are the ultimate wearable technology as they are worn to replace missing body parts and to restore the appearance and increase function. Today, prosthetics can also collect data, monitor the health of the user and quantify outcomes. I am a trained visual/medical artist and Certified Clinical Anaplastologist. With over 20 years of clinical experience, I work directly with patients to design (and fabricate) various types of life like and assistive body prostheses. I have an expertise in the manufacture of silicone devices and work with 3D scanning and 3D printing technologies to design novel external body prostheses. I maintain a research practice and have a keen interest in new materials and manufacturing technologies and finding ways to apply them. I am fascinated by the convergence of prosthetic tech with wearable technologies and fashion tech. I have spent my career designing prosthetic devices for people with an altered anatomy; due to disease (cancer), trauma, or a congenital condition. I have focused on developing devices for women because that is the population that has received the least amount of consideration and R&D. As a female, I can more readily recognize the lack of suitable devices specific to women’s needs. As a medically trained designer and creator, I can develop solutions that are physical products. All of us, either through how we are born, or through disease, our lifestyle, or just aging, will have an “altered” anatomy. We are all heading in the same direction. My contribution is recognizing how devices designed for the body can be made better and how well designed devices can facilitate not only our physical well-being but also our quality of life.Design for Altered
