ABOUT IRAKLI KHODELI

We need global ethical standards guiding progress in science and technology and strong national policy frameworks to safely harness the power of such emerging technologies as Artificial Intelligence. I have been pursuing this goal with UNESCO for over 18 years. While leading the Social and Human Sciences programme in UNESCO\'s Jakarta Regional Bureau for Science in Asia and the Pacific (20••••20), I engaged directly with the governments and the civil society in the region to build inclusive societies and foster equitable human development, based on universal human rights frameworks. Currently heading the Ethics of AI Unit at UNESCO Paris Headquarters, I am working on finding a practical answer to one of the most consequential questions of today: how to govern AI so that it delivers on its unprecedented potential to benefit humanity, while ensuring against serious risks to human rights, human dignity and fundamental freedoms. The answer lies in the operationalization of the only global standard on ethical governance of AI - the UNESCO Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence (2021), agreed upon and adopted by all Member States of UNESCO.
