ABOUT IOZSEF MISKOLCZI
I am a mining engineer specializing in mine closure planning, mine waste management, and hydro-geotechnical modelling of mine waste facilities. I have worked my entire life in and around mines, working my way up from laborer to Principal Engineer, which allows me a unique perspective and deep understanding of the mining processes. Over the past 20+ years, I have worked as a consultant on mine closure and reclamation projects across multiple jurisdictions, helping mining companies develop technically robust and practical closure strategies that address long-term environmental performance, regulatory expectations, and closure liabilities. My work focuses on the complex interaction between geotechnical systems, hydrology, and environmental performance in mine waste facilities, including waste rock dumps, tailings storage facilities, and heap leach pads. I have extensive experience in developing numerical and analytical models to predict post-closure behavior, including draindown, water balance, and unsaturated flow in cover systems. Key areas of expertise include:• Mine closure and reclamation planning• Closure cost estimating and financial assurance• Mine waste cover system design and performance modelling• Tailings and heap leach draindown modelling• Unsaturated flow and soil–atmosphere interaction modelling• Geotechnical investigations and infrastructure design• Instrumentation, monitoring systems, and field trials• Data acquisition and performance evaluationI have contributed to multiple international conferences on mine closure, tailings management, and mine waste engineering, presenting work on draindown modelling, probabilistic cover performance evaluation, and closure system design. I am particularly interested in advancing predictive tools and monitoring approaches that improve confidence in closure designs and reduce long-term environmental risk.If you are working on mine closure planning, cover system design, or post-closure water management challenges, I welcome the opportunity to connect.
