About Indu Sharma
I am a dedicated microbiologist and biotechnologist with a Ph.D. in Biotechnology and Molecular Parasitology, and over 20 years of experience in molecular microbiology, parasitology, and environmental microbiology. My expertise spans from drug discovery and the molecular biology of non-coding RNA in Plasmodium falciparum to the ecophysiology of marine microbes using multi-omics approaches. I have a demonstrated track record in both research and education, having secured approximately $2.7 million in funding through federal and private sources, which has enabled me to establish a well-equipped laboratory and support numerous research initiatives. At Hampton University, where I serve as an Associate Professor, I have developed and implemented a variety of programs aimed at integrating high-impact research experiences into undergraduate education, including the NSF-supported Course-based Undergraduate Research Experience (eCURE) program. My commitment to STEM education and student success is evident through my roles as PI on several major grants and Co-Director of the Summer Bridge Program, which engages high school students in environmental and marine sciences. I am passionate about advancing STEM workforce development, with a specific focus on enhancing education and research training in microbiology and genomics. In addition to my academic roles, I am an active collaborator with renowned institutions such as the Marine Biological Laboratory and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, where I have been a two-time recipient of the Ernest E. Just Fellowship. These collaborations have enriched my research on marine bacterial physiology and adaptation, with findings presented at national conferences. I am open to opportunities within higher education and non-profit organizations that prioritize STEM education, curriculum innovation, and workforce development. My goal is to lead transformative initiatives that foster educational excellence and prepare the next generation of scientists for meaningful careers in microbiology and biotechnology.
