ABOUT IMAD AHMED
As a kid, I watched a lot of David Attenborough. For my 8th birthday, I asked my parents to donate to the WWF. They convinced me to support a family in Pakistan instead. At UC Berkeley, I intended to study Environmental Economics and Policy. Family prevailed upon me to pursue straight economics, though within the domain, I gravitated towards Development Economics. My subsequent career in women\'s rights in Pakistan and then in structuring investment in Rwandan infrastructure followed that vein. I took a career break to reflect on the impact of infrastructure investment on the poorest segments of society. In the course of my PhD research on Zambia\'s power outages, I hit upon climate change as a cause, and my subsequent time at climate consultancy Vivid Economics exposed me to broader climate policy issues and solutions in both developed and developing country contexts. Now at the Tony Blair Institute, I get to simultaneously serve the natural world and the welfare of the world\'s most vulnerable people. At TBI, I\'m rolling out our embedded Climate Finance Advisors programme and am leading our climate diplomacy support in TBI’s counterpart governments in Africa. Previously as a transactions advisor to the Government of Rwanda, I structured and negotiated $800M of investment, including several firsts – the tender and risk allocation within Africa’s first Water Purchase Agreement in Kigali Bulk Water; the risk allocation in Sub-Saharan Africa\'s first utility scale solar Power Purchase Agreement with GigaWatt Global; as well as the delivery of blood using drones under a with Zipline. I contributed significantly to Rwanda\'s 2016 Law on Governing Public Private Partnerships and designed an appraisal methodology for the Treasury to evaluate additional contingent liabilities. I\'m an Honorary Research Fellow at UCL, a member of the Liberal International Climate Justice Committee; am on the academic board of the Paddy Ashdown Forum, and am on the board of Liberal International British Group. I\'ve published thought pieces across major outlets including the Financial Times and The New York Times and have published academic work in peer-reviewed journals.
