ABOUT ILJA KUESTERS

My goal is to apply my expertise in automation, assay development, and high throughput screening as well as biochemical and biophysical characterization of proteins to discover and develop novel biologics. Innovative protein biochemist with extensive expertise in engineering and biochemical/biophysical analysis of both soluble and membrane proteins. Driven by a passion for new technologies, complex assay development, bioengineering, and automation of cellular and protein assays. Extensive knowledge of automated antibody discovery and characterization as well as assay development for high throughput screening campaigns at protein and cellular levels. Pioneered several biophysical and cellular assays in the context of membrane biology by overcoming technical challenges through creative engineering, problem-solving, and a deep understanding of biochemistry. Demonstrated effective cross-functional collaborations with physicists, biologists, engineers, and computer scientists by driving projects forward through effective communication. Acquired fast learning skills by routinely adapting to cutting-edge technologies and new concepts, and the ambition to meet timely deliverables and challenging deadlines.Current job responsibilities: Assay development: Design and execute custom HT assays using SPR (Carterra), BLI (Octet), AlphaLISA, ELISA, and fluorescence assays; establishment of bispecific antibody screening platform including HT-cell binding and functional assays.🤖 Automation: implementation and integration of new automation equipment; harmonizing and standardizing screening assays; automating cellular binding; providing expert advice for CAPEX planning; training and support of end-users. High-throughput screening (HTS): HT-SPR screening on Carterra-LSA (protein binding kinetics, epitope binning); develop and execute semi- and fully automated ELISA.⏲ Workflow optimization: modernizing sample logistics and traceability within and across departments; invention of assay request system that integrates company database, barcode tracking, and automated analysis that results in reduced turnaround time of screening assays with improved reliability and data quality; close collaboration with research informatics team for optimization of sample and data logistics. Leadership: Initiating and leading cross-functional workflow optimization task force; representing the department in site automation task force; volunteering as lab safety delegate and for lab management function; training junior staff and colleagues.
