ABOUT ILHAN ESMAIL

I am working towards making additive manufacturing a more accessible and affordable technology for businesses. I use my background in materials engineering to educate companies on additive driven solutions while ensuring information is truthful and accurate. Previously, I worked in aerospace and advanced materials research. I learnt how to oversee and manage my own research project, coordinate testing and analysis methods, and write technical articles. My interest in the subject lead me to publish several engineering papers in research journals. As a co-op student at the National Research Council of Canada, I worked with carbon based nano-materials for energy transport and bio-inspired ceramics to increase the toughness of naturally brittle materials. The ability to mimic nature and develop stronger engineered structures fascinated me so I develop a convolutional neural network model (CNN) that analyzed natural structures and returned engineering parameters such that researchers could reproduce natural geometries. I also developed a method to manufacture ceramic shielding using laser ablation and published a paper on it. This work helped researchers develop architectured ceramics with a 220% increase in toughness. In my free time, I enjoy watching soccer and playing in a competitive soccer league in the Montreal area. I am also a performing musician with 10 years of experience playing the guitar.
