ABOUT ISTVAN FABIAN
I am a technology leader with more than two decades of experience across support, consulting, analytics, and leadership roles, most of that time at Microsoft. My career began hands-on building networks, troubleshooting systems, and working directly with customers long before moving into leadership. That early experience continues to shape how I approach technology organizations. Sound decisions require understanding how systems behave in real environments and how customers actually experience them.Over the course of my career I have worked as a Support Engineer, Escalation Engineer, Premier Field Engineer, Consultant, Engineering Manager, Analytics Lead, and now Director. During my consulting years I worked with enterprise customers across public sector, energy, finance, and technology, often operating at the intersection of engineering, architecture, delivery, and customer engagement.Today I lead a team of data analysts focused on customer support analytics and operations strategy across Microsoft’s Security, Identity, and Management Solutions support business. The organization operates globally and supports customers from individual end users to the largest enterprises. Our work focuses on analyzing large operational datasets from support systems and turning that information into insight that helps leadership better understand how support operates and where improvements can be made.My perspective on analytics is shaped by years spent inside support organizations and consulting engagements. I have seen the system from several angles: as an engineer handling cases, as an escalation engineer solving complex problems, as a consultant working alongside customers, and now as a leader using data to understand the broader system. My leadership approach is influenced by servant leadership. I believe leaders exist to support the people doing the work, remove obstacles, and create conditions where strong teams can succeed. I have mentored many colleagues across roles and career stages, and it has been rewarding to see people grow into new responsibilities and leadership positions. At heart I am still an engineer who enjoys understanding complex systems and how they behave under real-world conditions.Outside of work I have a strong appreciation for craftsmanship. I am a musician and electronics repair enthusiast, and I enjoy working with instruments, tools, and technology. I also enjoy languages and learning new systems. For me the same principles apply everywhere: curiosity, attention to detail, and respect for quality.
