ABOUT IDURRE ALONSO

Idurre Alonso is Head of Modern and Contemporary Art and Curator of Latin American Collections at the Getty Research Institute. Prior to this role, she served as Curator at the Museum of Latin American Art (MOLAA) from 2003 to 2014, where she organized a number of notable exhibitions, including LA Presencia: Latin American Art in US Collections (2007), Changing the Focus: Latin American Photography 19••••••••11), and Regina Galindo: Vulnerable (2012). In 2015, she was jointly awarded the Emerging Curator Award from Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions with Selene Preciado, leading to the exhibition Customizing Language (2016) and a corresponding publication.Alonso contributed to two exhibitions as part of the Pacific Standard Time: Los Angeles/Latin America initiative in 2017: The Metropolis in Latin America (18••••30), co-curated with Maristella Casciato for the Getty Research Institute, and Photography in Argentina, 18••••10: Contradiction and Continuity, co-curated with Judith Keller for the Getty Museum. Her more recent exhibitions include Reinventing the Americas: Construct, Erase, Repeat (2022) and Alfredo Boulton: Looking at Venezuela (19••••••••23), both presented at the Getty Research Institute.Alonso’s research interests encompass experimental photographic practices from Latin America, the intersections between art and experimental poetry, the development of national narratives since the nineteenth century, and the exploration of power hierarchies in emerging Latin American art. She holds a BA and MA in Art History from the Universidad del País Vasco, Spain, and completed her Ph.D. there in 2024 with a dissertation titled Photography is Art: Experimental Photographic Practices in Argentina, 19••••72. Alonso has edited six books and contributed to numerous international conferences and symposia, including those hosted by CAA, ALAA, and the Western Museums Association.
