About Idris Brewster
idris brewster is a Brooklyn-born artist and creative technologist that disrupts traditional narratives through spatial experiences, all the while empowering others to do the same. idris’s work explores the liminal space between the historical archive, public space, and technology. idris is the Executive Director of Kinfolk Foundation, an augmented reality archive that puts the power of monument making and historical preservation into the hands of Black and Brown communities. Before Kinfolk, idris worked for Google, developing an educational program called Code Next that exposes Black and Brown youth to the world of computer science, allowing them to have the tools to build their own future. The goal of Code Next is to increase black and brown participation in STEAM. idris has received several awards and recognitions for his work, including Forbes 30 under 30, Sundance Film Festival, Tribeca Film Festival, New Museum, Eyebeam, the United Nations, and the Museum of Modern Art.

Kinfolk Tech is building people-powered narrative infrastructure for collective memory. In a time when history is being rewritten, books are being banned, and monuments still glorify oppression, Kinfolk Tech asks a critical question: Who will preserve the stories of the people? We are a nonprofit organization using immersive technology, public art, and community-centered design to preserve and share untold stories of place. These stories reshape how we understand history and help us imagine new futures. Our goal is to safeguard and share the histories of communities that have long been pushed to the margins. But we don’t just document stories. We return narrative power to the people who live them. We work closely with Black, Brown, Indigenous, and Queer communities to gather local stories, build cultural archives, and bring memory to life through AR monuments, media, events, and digital tools. Together, we are creating a new commemorative model. One where communities shape what is remembered and public space becomes a canvas for truth, imagination, and belonging.
