ABOUT IAN HOPKINSON

I am a data scientist with experience working in small, large and medium-sized enterprises and also as an academic scientist. I\'m passionate about data and technology.Currently a consultant at Deva DataAt the UNOCHA Centre for Humanitarian Data - a project I was involved in at its beginning in 2014. I write code to bring in data to the Humanitarian Data Exchange (HDX). I also contributed to the new API for accessing humanitarian data - HDX HAPI.At GB Group Plc I built Property Intelligence delivered via GBG MatchCode. This involved fine tuning requirements in collaboration with the Product Manager and early customers, carrying out the technical work of sourcing, processing and modelling the data, transferring the ongoing build to our Production team and providing the Sales and Marketing teams with technical support involving talking directly to key customers. Also at GBG I worked on a Data Mesh project, producing a prototype on my own before joining a team to develop a more robust version.Previously I was Senior Data Scientist at ScraperWiki (now The Sensible Code Company) where I discussed requirements with customers and defined technical solutions which I either delivered personally or through the team I led. In addition I delivered training in data science, and blogged on a range of technical subjects relating to data science on the ScraperWiki blog. This included reviews of technical books, case studies of the work we did at ScraperWiki and software engineering. Prior to ScraperWiki, I worked as industrial research scientist at Unilever where I worked on home and personal care products including washing powders, toothpaste, shampoos, deodorants and product packaging. My research in this area has been in the modelling and measurement of appearance and image analysis. Before this, I worked as an academic in the areas of experimental polymer physical chemistry, interfacial physical chemistry, soft matter physics, and biological physics; utilising a range of techniques including neutron scattering, ATR-FT-IR, magnetic resonance imaging, confocal microscopy and dynamic light scattering. In addition to research I have had experience in line management and software specification and
