ABOUT IAN WARD

I am an experienced structural/mechanical engineer specialising in advanced numerical analysis and structural dynamics, with a flair for developing innovative solutions based on appropriate research and development.I have over 40 years’ experience of structural analysis, design, monitoring and failure investigation on a wide range of structures, in a variety of market sectors - Bridges, Buildings, Nuclear, Oil & Gas, Renewables, Telecommunications, and Transportation. I also have experience with vibration monitoring and the design/review of numerous remedial solutions for controlling excessive structural vibration.My work involves a broad range of advanced computer-based structural analysis techniques, and I have a particular interest in structural dynamics - assessing the dynamic behaviour of structures when subjected to seismic, wind, blast, pedestrian/crowd or traffic loading. This has required my development of numerous software tools for investigating dynamic loading, structural response and for data processing. Some of these tools have been made available online Over the past 30 years I have developed expertise with both onshore and offshore wind turbines, including: • Wind turbine design assessments and failure investigations, including designs from the leading WTG suppliers;• Offshore wind turbine foundation design (concept / FEED / detailed design). Key aspects of this work have been: foundation sizing for different water depths; prediction of natural frequencies; loading assessment; fatigue life calculations (piling and operational); and strength/buckling checks;• Use of strain gauge measurements to determine offshore foundation loads for use in revised fatigue life calculations. Measurements have been performed on a number of different offshore wind farms.
