ABOUT IAN SMART
As a director, adviser and executive coach, I work with an exciting range of businesses and people, aiming to help them achieve their potential and reach their objectives. In July 2020, I co-founded Impact Central, an accelerator supporting impact start-ups that wish to achieve positive social and environmental change alongside commercial success. Our six-month programme focuses on the founders, with our belief that Better Founders Build Better Businesses.I am a Senior Adviser to Azets, the international accounting, tax and advisory business; and non-executive Chairman of Dakota Advisory, a corporate treasury consultancy. Alongside coaching and mentoring, I am also Accountant in Residence at the London College of Fashion, a Board Member and Trustee of Cockpit Studios, and sit on the Advisory Board of The Disruption House, a consultancy accelerating sustainability and innovation for all through data and research.Prior to this, I was a partner in Grant Thornton for over 20 years, where I held a number of senior roles both in client-facing and leadership capacities. I was Managing Partner of Grant Thornton’s London Office and a member of the firm’s National Leadership Board for seven years. As managing partner of Grant Thornton’s Corporate Finance business, I gained considerable experience in corporate finance, specialising in transaction advisory services on buy-outs, acquisitions, disposals and financial reconstructions in both public and private company situations. My wife - Liz - and I have two daughters - Milly, who is a trainee lawyer in London, and Elena, who is at Bath University studying Civil Engineering. I split my time between our flat in London and our home in Harpenden. My other passions include watching football (a long-standing season ticket holder at Chelsea FC), yoga (addict), running (half marathon is pretty much my limit), music (rooted in being a teenager in the 70s), reading, film, art and travel. With my daughters, I have made two trips to Tanzania carrying out voluntary work; both experiences were truly amazing.
