ABOUT IAN SHERMAN
Retired from public accounting practice, Ian Sherman was a Tax Partner at EY with more than 35 years of experience. He managed the Ottawa Tax Practice of over 90 professionals. In 2006, Ian was admitted as a Fellow to the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario. Ian was also an instructor for the CPA Canada In-Depth Income Tax Course for over 10 years and then contributed to CPA Canada’s Tax Education Committee for several years including as Chair. In 2013, Ian received the CPA Canada Award for Excellence in Income Tax in recognition of his service to the Profession and the Canadian Tax Community. In June 2022, the Algonquin College Board of Governors awarded Ian an Honorary Degree from the School of Business in recognition of his commitment to the College’s values of caring, learning, integrity and respect.In addition to a current part-time contract with EY, through his company Relationship Capital Inc, Ian is now assuming corporate roles including as a director, family business adviser and board member. Ian is applying his director designation (ICD.D) from the Institute of Corporate Directors and also leveraging his business and professional relationship network. In November 2021, Ian was awarded the Order of Ottawa in recognition of outstanding leadership, meritorious service and exceptional contributions to the City of Ottawa. In 2009, the Ottawa Chamber of Commerce named Ian Business Person of the Year.Currently serving as chair of the Board of Directors of both the Ottawa Board of Trade and the Jewish Federation of Ottawa, Ian has volunteered and served in numerous leadership positions for many organizations including a number as Board Chair. Among these organizations are: Congregation Beth Shalom, OSEG Foundation, Ottawa-Gatineau Youth Foundation, Ottawa Hospital Foundation, Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation, Ottawa Senators Foundation, Soloway Jewish Community Centre and United Way East Ontario.Ian has received a number of community awards including the Gilbert Greenberg Distinguished Service Award for Community Service from the Jewish Federation of Ottawa in 2011 and the Freiman Family Young Leadership Award & United Jewish Communities of North America Young Leadership Award in In 2021, he was the recipient of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, Ottawa Philanthropy Award which recognizes annually an Outstanding Volunteer Fundraiser in the advancement of philanthropy. The Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation awarded him the 2021 Rabbi Dr. Reuven P. Bulka Award for outstanding commitment to improving local cancer care.
