About Ian Scheffler
I\'ve been fascinated by words since my parents read me Goodnight Moon. Today, as a science writer, I invite audiences to engage with complex concepts through the use of narrative and clear prose. In 2016, Simon & Schuster published my first book, Cracking The Cube, a work of narrative nonfiction about the world of competitive Rubik\'s Cube solving. I appeared in support of the book on various media outlets, including Good Morning America, NPR\'s Marketplace and CBC Radio. As a freelancer, I\'ve tackled topics as wide-ranging as chronic traumatic encephalopathy and the history of manga, for publications including The New Yorker and the Los Angeles Times. In 2022, a profile I wrote for Columbia Magazine won a CASE award. I recently collaborated with Invader, the French street artist, on Rubikcubist, the catalog for his 2022 exhibit of Rubik\'s Cube mosaics in Belgium. As a speaker, I\'ve discussed the mathematics, history and cultural impact of Rubik\'s Cube at Google and Johns Hopkins University, among other institutions. I also appeared on the second season of the History Channel\'s The Toys That Built America, in an episode featuring the puzzle. As a public school teacher, I\'ve helped dozens of students become the first in their families to attend college, including at selective institutions like Columbia, Cornell, NYU and UVA. I\'ve also designed curriculum funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities, in collaboration with the New York City Writing Project. More recently, I earned an Advanced Certificate in Computer Science Education from Hunter College, and taught high school computer science, helping students new to programming succeed on the AP Computer Science Principles exam.
