About Ian Loomis
Ian is a Professional Engineer, registered in Arizona, Colorado and New Mexico. Ian has more than 30 years’ experience including mine operations, consulting, research and education with a focus on underground mine ventilation systems, including studies, planning, design and operation. In 1987 he graduated from the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology (New Mexico Tech) with a Bachelor’s (B.Sc.) degree in Mining Engineering and started his formal mining career at the US Department of Energy’s Waste Isolation Pilot Plant where he served as the cognizant (responsible) engineer for the underground ventilation system. Ian then attend (19••••97) the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) earning both Master (M.S.) and Doctoral (Ph.D.) degrees in Mining Engineering. He stayed at Virginia Tech, through early 2001, to teach upper-division courses in Mine Health and Safety and Mine Ventilation, as well as work in research associated with coal and energy production within the Commonwealth of Virginia. Ian then moved to consulting, joining Mine Ventilation Services, Inc (20••••05), where he was involved in several states and numerous countries. He then joined PT Freeport Indonesia (20••••12) as the Technical Expert for the underground mine ventilation system at their mining complex in Papua, Indonesia. In 2013, Ian joined Amec Foster Wheeler (formerly-AMEC) as a Principal Mining Engineer, Underground Mine Ventilation Specialist. Ian has served in the Mine Ventilation Lead capacity for numerous projects at various levels, from Scoping through Execution, including: Newmont’s Leeville Mine Shaft #3 (Nevada), the Oyu Tolgoi Mine (Mongolia), the Bingham Canyon Mine (Utah), Maturi Mine (Minnesota), KSM complex (British Columbia), and the Voisey’s Bay Underground project (Newfoundland and Labrador). Additionally, he has served as Senior/Peer review for several projects for mines in Chile.
